Description
Nos 4 and 5 on High West Street are mid-19th century buildings that were formerly Williams' Bank, established in 1786 by the Williams family of Bridehead, who later supported architect Benjamin Ferrey. In 1897, the bank merged with Wiltshire and Dorset Bank. The buildings are constructed from ashlar Bath stone and stand three storeys tall. They feature a very elaborate and heavy moulded stone eaves cornice with modillions, and a moulded stone cornice on two ornamental consoles above the ground floor. The rusticated quoins add to the decorative elements.
The ground floor has an arcaded design, with the two outer arches containing two six-panelled doors topped with semi-circular fanlights, while the two inner arches have sashes with semi-circular heads. The soffits are moulded, the jambs are panelled, and the spandrels are also panelled. There are four ranges of sashes on the first and second floors, all adorned with elaborate moulded architraves, and the first-floor sashes are topped with dentilled pediments. The panelled chimneys are finished with elaborate cornicing and acroteria.
