Description
Shroton House is a house dated 'William Jeanes 1728' and 'William and Ann Jeanes 1736', with additions and alterations made at various times in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It has an L-plan layout with infilling, featuring roughcast and Flemish bond brickwork. The roofs are slated and tiled, partially hidden by a parapet, with brick stacks in various locations. The house is two storeys high, with attics and basements.
The south front has seven bays, highlighted by a central two-storey bow. To the right, there is a late 19th-century porch with a flat roof and balustrade. On the left side of the range, there are three French doors, and the windows are 12-pane sashes with glazing bars. An 18th-century lead downpipe features an ornate rainwater head with acanthus decoration. The front façade is marked by a giant order of Doric pilasters that flank the main features and define its ends, with each pilaster supporting an entablature.
The east front was originally four bays, but the two southern bays have had their windows blocked. The remaining bays to the right still have their original segmentally headed 12-pane sashes with thick glazing bars. The attic includes hipped dormers, and there is a central basement plank door.
Inside, notable features include 18th- and 19th-century panelling, an 18th-century staircase with open strings, scrolled spandrels, turned balusters, and moulded handrails, as well as 18th-century fireplaces and overmantels.
