Description
The Parish Church of St Andrew is a Grade II* listed building located in Burstock Village. The church features a nave that possibly dates back to the 12th century, a west tower and north chapel from the 15th century, and a chancel and south porch added in the 20th century. It underwent restoration in 1877. The walls are made of Ham stone ashlar, and the roofs are slate with stone gable copings and a cross at the east gable.
The west tower has three stages, supported by diagonal and right-angle buttresses with set-offs. It features bell-openings with Y-tracery and a crenellated parapet with renewed pinnacles and gargoyles. The west doorway is pointed with moulded jambs. The nave has two windows: one single light and one three-light window with stone mullions and 4-centred heads, each with separate labels above. The south porch has a stone slab and slate roof with a stone gable coping, and its entrance features a pointed segmental head and chamfered jambs. The inner doorway, which is from the 12th century, has continuous roll-moulded jambs.
Inside, the chancel has a three-light east window with intersecting tracery and a stopped label above. The large tower arch leading to the nave has a pointed head, with a door located high beside the south jamb. The chancel arch from the 15th century consists of two respond-orders with casement moulding in between. Both the nave and chancel have plastered barrel ceilings. The font is a cylindrical stone bowl with a large rope-moulding around the centre, lead-lined and dating from the 12th century, while the moulded stone stem is from the 20th century. There is a piscina in the north chapel's south wall, featuring a recess with an ogee head and square drain from the 15th century.
