Description

Streche's Almshouses, built in 1741, are located on the south side of East Street. The building is constructed from colourwashed brick and features a pitched Purbeck slate roof with brick gable coping and red brick stacks. It is two storeys high and has blocked giant angle pilasters, along with two pilasters supporting a central pediment. The tympanum of the pediment contains an oblong panel with an inscription that reads: "This ALMSHOUSE Founded time immemorial for the maintenance of six antient Men and five Women was Endowed AD 1418 by JOHN STRECH Esqr and Rebuilt by HENRY DRAX and JOHN PITT Esqrs. AD 1741."

Atop the pediment is a square wooden bellcote featuring round arches with moulded voussoirs and keystones, flanked by pilasters that support a full entablature, topped with an ogival lead roof. The first floor has six modern casement windows and three blocked windows, while the ground floor has eight late 19th-century casement windows. A planked door is accessed by two steps and is set within a blocked semi-circular arch, framed by blocked pilasters that support an entablature with a keystone. The building also displays a Sun Insurance Company Badge.
