Description
The Swyre War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1921. It is made of Portland stone ashlar and is set on a concrete foundation. The memorial is located opposite a crossroads on the main street and the B3157, on the south side of the village, near Holy Trinity Church and just west of the remains of the old village cross.
The memorial faces north and is enclosed by four ornamented metal posts linked by chains. It features a Latin stone cross at the top, which bears the letters I.H.S, representing Iesus Hominum Salvator (Jesus, saviour of mankind). The cross rises from a roll-moulding upon a tapering chamfered shaft that is 2.5 meters high. This shaft stands on a square plinth, which is part of a three-tier stepped base, making the total height 1.1 meters.
On the front of the plinth, there is a hexagram or Star of Creation, a trefoil, and an inscription in black lettering that reads: "THE GREAT WAR/ AUG. 4. 1914 – NOV. 11. 1918/ IN SACRED MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF SWYRE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR/ THEIR KING AND COUNTRY." The top tier of the base is inscribed with the phrase: “DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP IN VICTORY.” Additionally, the east and west sides of the plinth list six names of the Fallen.
