Description
42 South Street is a late 19th-century front applied to an earlier house, although retaining (or reproducing) the cornice detail featuring wooden modillions to the eaves. The building is two storeys high, constructed of colour-washed brick with a pitched slate roof. The first floor has three sash windows. A late 19th-century shop front is present on the ground floor. Two attic dormers, each with casements and glazing bars, are visible. The rear of the building features a two-storey hammer-dressed stone extension, likely dating to the 18th century, and a contemporary iron casement window with lead glazing bars on the first floor, with later casements elsewhere. A single planked door provides access. An early 19th-century brick extension of one storey with a lean-to slate roof is also present, featuring fixed windows with vertical glazing bars.
