Description
The Hirde and Hardey monuments are four table-tombs located 15 metres north of the chancel of the Church of St Nicholas in Sydling St Nicholas. These tombs date from the 18th century and are made of stone.
The first tomb has plain sides and pilasters, a cavetto cornice, and a flat top block, commemorating Francis Hirde, who died on 26 June 1721. The second tomb is made of white stone, featuring plain sides and rounded recessed ends, with a moulded top block; the inscription is partially illegible but is dedicated to a member of the Hirde family. The third tomb has plain sides, bulbous end blocks with projecting rosettes, and includes the phrase "memento mori," dedicated to Mrs Ioane Hardey. The fourth tomb features three recessed quatrefoils with foliate centres, a cavetto cornice, and a flat top block, inscribed in memory of Richard Hardey on the end block.
