Description
There are seven table tombs located in the churchyard of St Mary's. The first tomb is situated at the angle of the north porch and aisle wall. It is made of stone and features two panelled sides on each face, with a date of 1707 inscribed on the rear. It has very flattened ovolo-moulds and a heavy moulded cornice. The second tomb, located 8 yards north of the porch, is also made of stone and commemorates Samuel Cox, who died in 1741. This tomb has panelled sides with modillions and a heavy moulded cornice. The third tomb is found 6 yards northeast of the porch, but its inscription is illegible and it has fielded-panel corners. The fourth tomb is 7 yards west of the tower and is dedicated to Edward (?) Lockner, who died in the 1780s. It features corners with three tiers of fielded panels. The fifth tomb, located 10 yards northwest of the tower, is made of stone with flat ovolo panels and is dated 1719. The sixth tomb is 17 yards west of the tower, has three tiers of fielded panels at the corners, and its inscription is illegible. It features a heavy cornice with a low hipped top and dates from the mid-18th century. The seventh tomb, in a mid-18th century style, is dedicated to Thomas Fox, Gentleman, who died in 1859. Its panels have straight-chamfered framing, which is incorrect for the style.
