Description

Witchampton Bridge is a road bridge over the River Allen, built in 1795 by Samuel Kent, which incorporates some earlier materials. The bridge is constructed from brick with stone dressings and features a classical design. It has three unequal spans, each with a segmental-headed arch that includes stone keystones and an oversailing archivolt ring. These arches are supported by stone piers that step back above the foundations of an earlier bridge, with cutwaters on the upstream (north) side. Below the parapet, there is a brick stringcourse, and roundels at each end, which are currently obscured by vegetation as of 2015. The parapet is topped with stone copings, and the walls curve outward at each end, ending in square piers. Additionally, the parapet displays two 19th-century cast-iron plaques: one for a traction engine and another for transportation.
