Description

Pond Farmhouse is a mid-17th century farmhouse featuring coursed rubble walls and a gable-ended slate roof with end brick stacks. The building is symmetrical, standing two storeys and an attic high, with five bays. It has three-light hollow chamfered stone mullioned windows set in ogee moulded surrounds. The central doorway is framed by a moulded 4-centred arch within a square surround, and it features a 19th-century panelled double door. A continuous, returned hood mould or string course runs above the ground floor windows, stepping up over the door. The rear facade mirrors the front in window style, but each window has a separate returned label. The central doorway at the rear appears to be made of Portland stone, with a 4-centred moulded head and continuous jambs in a square surround.

The west end wall has a two-light mullioned window that has been inserted into a former doorway, while a 19th or 20th-century stone mullioned window is located in the east end wall. Inside, the farmhouse features stone fireplaces with hollow chamfer and ogee moulded 4-centred arches, all with continuous jambs in square surrounds. An upstairs fireplace on the west side is made of stone with a plain chamfered 4-centre head and continuous jambs. The ceilings are supported by medium stop-chamfered beams, and the collar-beam roof retains original timbers that may have been reset. Although most other interior features are modern, it is likely that the house originally had a four-room plan with a central cross passage, flanked by two unheated service rooms, which is an expensive and relatively rare design choice that allows for a symmetrical facade while maintaining a cross passage.
