Description

The K6 telephone kiosk in Winterborne Whitechurch is a Grade II listed structure designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of King George V. This kiosk is made of cast iron and glass, featuring three glazed sides with eight registers and margin lights, while the rear side is solid with reeded decoration. Above the four arched sides is a canopy dome inspired by Soane, with a crown in relief above each glazed panel that is inscribed with the word 'TELEPHONE'. The interior has been updated with modern equipment.

The K6, also known as the 'Jubilee' telephone kiosk, is an iconic example of industrial design, showcasing Scott's blend of Neoclassical forms with a modern function. Approximately 11,000 of these kiosks were produced, making it a significant part of British architectural history. This particular kiosk is well-placed in the village, maintaining a good visual relationship with other nearby Grade II listed buildings.
