Description

A pair of houses, dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, situated at the end of a row, returning to South Parade. The houses are rendered with a concrete tile mansard roof. The exterior presents two storeys with one window each. Above, a raking dormer features a four-pane sash window, and a bold, canted oriel is present with a plain sash. It has a dentilled cornice that extends across the full width, accompanied by a simple, panelled skirt. Interior panelled shutters are found at No. 16. The ground floor windows are four-pane sashes, and centrally located arched doorways are framed by reeded pilasters. These doorways feature keystones, reeded transoms, and painted fanlights over six-panel doors (partly glazed at No. 15). A small plinth, a high blocking course, and a coped parapet are also present. Each gable possesses a very deep, narrow stack; the stack on the right rises in brickwork to clear the adjacent, higher property. The left gable is plain and offset, with a wide door incorporating margin-pane glazing. The rear elevation is in painted brick, featuring a nine-pane above a twelve-pane sash window for each property. No. 16 also has a raking dormer with nine panes. The interior was not inspected. Despite some alterations, the houses retain the scale of the earlier buildings along the quayside.
