Description

The summer house and adjoining garden walls, located to the northeast of Rosteague House, date from the mid to late 19th century, although the walls are earlier. The summer house features a nearly conical roof made of Somerset reed thatch over an original wheat reed roof, while the garden walls are constructed from cob and slatestone rubble with slate copings. The summer house is situated in the northeast corner of a formal rectangular garden that is attached to Rosteague House to the southeast. The front of the summer house, which faces southeast, is open and supported by rustic tree trunks, with the original thatch arched between the posts. Inside, there is an original rustic roof structure, a beach pebble patterned floor, and walls covered with shells arranged in small squares, each featuring a floral pattern. At the center of the wall is a reused 17th-century Baroque carving depicting Abraham and Isaac with a goat. The upper part of the terraced geometric box garden, known as The French Garden, is believed to date from the 16th or 17th century.
