Description
The milestone on the western side of Lower Trevollard Crossroads is an 18th-century stone structure, square in shape, with a projecting cap and standing approximately one meter tall. The top of each side features panels of dressed stone with carved inscriptions, while the lower body is roughly hewn. The milestone is painted white and inscribed in Sans Serif capitals with the distances: 'FOY / IV', 'LISK / XI', and 'LOS / V'. The lettering is highlighted in black paint, and there is a black painted band below the inscriptions.
This milestone was established following the 1697 Acts of Parliament that authorized the placement of direction stones at crossroads. It is part of a unique collection of milestones and guidestones located at road junctions in the area south of Liskeard, between Looe and Fowey, along what are now quiet country lanes. The milestone is also marked in its current position on the Ordnance Survey map published in 1880.
It is listed for its historic interest as an intact 18th-century milestone in its original location and for its group value with other listed milestones in this part of Cornwall.
