Description

The building is a detached wool store located immediately south-southwest of Shepherds Purse, Bankside, Wool Store and Stables. It dates from around 1840 and was rebuilt, likely retaining some earlier materials. The structure is made of cob and stone rubble patching, topped with a hipped slate roof that has been partly reclad in corrugated iron.

The wool store has a rectangular plan oriented at right angles to the road. The west end features a wool loft with louvred sides, while the east end and south side include outshuts that may be part of the original building. It stands two storeys tall. On the north front, at the right-hand end and the west end facing the road, the first floor has three wooden louvred openings with adjustable louvres. The south front has a loft doorway along with doorways on the ground floor. The centre of the north front appears to have been rebuilt in stone rubble. The east end's outshut likely represents the remains of the original range, which has been reduced in height. At the rear (south), there is another cob outshut with a slate lean-to roof.

The interior has not been inspected. Historically, it is said to have been built by a Mr. Allanson from Yorkshire and is depicted on the 1840 tithe map. A report in the West Briton newspaper on 25 September 1840 mentions a fire that destroyed the premises, along with a significant quantity of wool and valuable tools. Wool stores with louvred lofts are quite uncommon in Cornwall.
