Description

Pencarne is a house dating from the early 19th century, with possible earlier origins for a rear wing. The main house is constructed of slatestone rubble, with granite dressings and quoins. Portions are rendered in cob. It has a hipped slate roof with ridge tiles and brick stacks to the sides. The plan is double-depth, with a central entrance leading to principal rooms of equal size on either side. A rear wing extends to the left.

The two-storey front of the house is symmetrical, with three windows. All windows are early 19th-century 12-pane sashes, detailed with voussoirs and keystones. The central panelled and glazed door is sheltered by a fine early 19th-century trellis porch featuring trefoils in the arch spandrels and a dentil cornice. An attached front wall, constructed of slatestone rubble with granite coping, runs in front of the house; it includes a gateway opposite the front door. The left end of the wall is blank. The two-storey rear wing has four 16-pane sashes to the first floor, with one window blind and painted. The ground floor has two 20th-century sashes and one 19th-century 16-pane sash to the right. A 20th-century addition is at the end of the wing. The rear of the wing features a catslide roof over a one-room plan outshut with two 20th-century windows. A single-storey lean-to extends from the right end of the main house, with a 6-pane light at the front. A round-arched stair light with margin glazing is on the first floor. The rear of the main house features a door and a 2-light 6-pane casement on both the ground and first floors. The interior of the house was not inspected.
