Description

The Parochial School, dated 1845, is a parish school with an attached master's house, now serving as a meeting room and private dwelling. It is located on Church View Road in Tuckingmill and has been slightly altered. The building is constructed from coursed dressed red sandstone with granite dressings, while the house is now painted white. The roofs are covered with modern pantiles and slate.

Designed in the Tudor style, the school features a T-plan layout with the main range oriented north-south and a wing projecting to the west, with the house attached to the rear of the north end of the main range. The one-and-a-half storey north facade includes the school on the right and the house on the left. The facade has a round-headed doorway offset to the left, featuring a chamfered surround and hoodmould. To the left, the house has a 6-light window that has been altered to create a separate doorway in the centre and right-hand lights, along with two single-light windows above. To the right, the school has a large 10-light window and a single-light window above, both with original diamond-pattern glazing in wooden cames.

The same diamond-pattern glazing is present in the west side fenestration, which includes an 8-light window in the main range on each side of the wing, and a large 10-light window in the gable of the wing. The main range south of the wing features a round-headed doorway with a hoodmould, accessed by four steps with iron handrails. The gable of the wing displays a cast-iron plaque with raised lettering that reads: "PAROCHIAL.SCHOOL TUCKINGMILL 1845." The building faces the Church of All Saints on Pendarves Street and is likely designed by the same architect, J. Hayward of Exeter.
