Description
Laity's Bakery is a shop with a dwelling, likely built in the later 19th century. It features a scored stucco facade, with uncoursed rubble on the sides and rear, and a scantle slate roof. The building has a rectangular double-depth plan and stands two storeys high with three bays. At the base, there is a granite plinth and channelled corner pilasters. The right side of the ground floor has a double-fronted shop window, which includes recessed glazed and panelled double doors with an overlight marked "COWLIN," flanked by large two-light windows. To the left is the domestic doorway, which has pilaster jambs and a recessed door with an overlight, all beneath a plain frieze and a prominent cornice, with a modern fascia board attached. The other openings consist of four-pane horned sashed windows with raised sills. The hipped roof has prominent projecting eaves and a chimney on the left side wall.
At the rear, there are unhorned sashed windows with glazing bars: two 12-paned windows on the ground floor, one 16-paned window on the first floor, and a 15-pane stair window. There is also a small lean-to addition that is not of special interest. Inside, the bakery retains an unusual set of original deal shop fittings, which include a complete set of shelving on all three sides, featuring Tuscan colonnettes, a plain frieze, and a convex cornice, along with small drawers with glass knobs and a built-in circular clock with Roman numerals.
