Description

Tregonce Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around the 17th century, possibly with earlier origins. It is constructed of stone rubble and has a bitumen-coated and cement-washed rag slate roof, featuring a gable end on the right, a hipped end on the left, and hipped ends on the two rear wings. The building includes end, axial, and side lateral stacks with brick shafts.

The interior was not accessible during the survey in 1987, so the layout is uncertain. It is believed that the original house had a 'U' shaped plan with the entrance near the center. The front range likely has a through or cross passage flanked by two rooms heated by end stacks, and the one-room plan wings to the rear on the right and left are heated by side lateral stacks. The ground slopes steeply to the left.

In the 18th or early 19th century, the house was extended on the higher right-hand side with a range of one-room plan heated by an end stack. In the 20th century, the lower end wall appears to have been partly rebuilt, and the front left room and part of the rear wing are now used as a store.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical window arrangement of four windows on the left and one on the right, reflecting the slope of the ground. The lower end on the left has been partly rebuilt, featuring a large 20th-century opening with two doors near the center. There are 20th-century sashes on the right and far right in the 18th-century extension. The first floor has four 20th-century sashes, with a sash in the far right extension. The rear elevation is largely unaltered, with the two-storey wings having hipped ends and 19th-century casements. A 19th-century single-storey outshot extension is located at the rear of the passage.

A full inspection of the interior may provide a more accurate dating of the farmhouse and reveal several interesting features.
