Description

Sea Mills House is a mill house with garden walls and gates, dating from around the mid-18th century, with extensions made in the late 18th, early 19th, and mid-19th centuries. The building is constructed of stone rubble, partly hung with slate and rag slates, topped with a scantle slate roof featuring hipped ends. It has axial and end stacks with brick shafts and complete cast iron guttering adorned with lion's masks.

The original layout of the house is unclear, but the presence of numerous straight joints suggests it has been built or rebuilt in at least four sections. The main part of the house has an 'L' shaped plan, with a long front range consisting of a three-room layout. The entrance is located to the right of the center, with a rear wing that overlooks the garden. The main rooms are arranged along the garden front and to the left of the entrance, while service rooms are located in a parallel back range, creating an overall double depth plan. In the mid-19th century, a one-room cottage was added to the left and is now part of the house.

The exterior features two storeys. The north-west front has a two:four window arrangement, with original 16-pane hornless sashes on the first floor. To the left is a mid-19th century extension, with the main range to the right. There are two 2-light casements flanking a blocked entrance on the left, a large late 19th century bay window near the center, and a 19th century panelled door with doorcase to the right. The first floor has four 16-pane sashes. The garden front to the south-west is hung with slate and rag slates, presenting a regular two-window front with a 16-pane sash to the left and a late 19th century bay window to the right, along with two 16-pane sashes on the first floor.

The interior has not been inspected. The property also includes dressed slate stone garden walls to the south-west and north-west, which feature slate coping and heavy 19th century cast-iron gates decorated with concentric circles, ovals, and cresting on top.
