Description
Penadlake Barn, located 10 meters south of Penadlake Farmhouse, is a multi-purpose barn that includes stables, a shippon, and a cartshed on the ground floor, with a threshing floor above. It was built in the early to mid 19th century. An early 19th-century bank barn is attached on the east side, while a mid-19th-century piggery projects at right angles on the south side. The barn is constructed from rubble stone and features a scantle slate roof that is hipped on the west side and gabled on the east.
The north elevation shows the earlier bank barn on the left, which has a slightly lower roof. The structure has two storeys, with timber lintels above the ground floor plank doors and two square openings flanking the double doors on the first floor. The later barn continues the elevation with an asymmetrical two-storey facade. The ground floor includes dressed voussoirs above the door on the left and the double-arched cart shed, which is partly blocked on the right, along with a hood over the cart shed.
On the first floor, there are two double doors with slate hoods above and a small ventilation opening. At the rear, stone steps lead to the first floor of the barn, alongside a semicircular opening with dressed voussoirs on the ground floor. The roof of the main barn features trusses with pegged joints in a Queen post design. Later modifications include King Post and struts supporting an axial beam at mid-span, with remains of torching visible.
