Description
Carvannel Farmhouse, dating from the early 18th century or earlier, has been enlarged and altered over time. It is constructed of uncoursed killas rubble with some granite quoins and features a thatched roof with brick chimneys. The building has a T-plan layout, consisting of a long single-depth range with an added outshut and a rear wing. It stands two storeys high and has four bays, with a central doorway that has a thin lintel. To the left of the doorway is one window, while two are to the right, and there are four windows on the first floor. All windows are small and fitted with 2-light horizontal-sliding sashes with glazing bars. At the extreme left end, outside the attached garden wall, the masonry includes quoin stones that may indicate the remains of a former doorway, which would have created a baffle entry beside the main fireplace.
The hipped roof features gable chimneys, while the rear of the building does not have any special architectural interest. Inside, the left gable wall contains a very wide fireplace with a chamfered granite jamb on the right side; the original massive lintel has been replaced with a steel beam. It is noted that the right-hand side of the house was previously used as a cowhouse.
The attached garden wall, located near the left end of the farmhouse and at the right-hand corner, encloses an area of approximately 15 square metres. This wall is made of slurried uncoursed rubble and stands about 2 metres high, ramping up to the right-hand corner of the house. It features ridged coping and a gateway aligned with the door. Additionally, there are four granite steps for mounting attached to the outer side of the wall, to the right of the gate.
