Description
Eastern Lodge, located on Illogan Cot Road, is the entrance lodge to Tehidy Park. It was likely built in the 1790s for Francis Basset, Lord de Dunstanville. The structure is made of coursed killas rubble with granite quoins and dressings, topped with a thatched roof. It has an octagonal plan and features a prominent porch. The building is one and a half storeys tall and designed in a Picturesque style. The porch is particularly striking, with a triangular arched outer doorway that has imposts, and a wider gable supported by three tiers of moulded corbels. This gable contains a small casement window with two arched lights and an emphatic hoodmould. The steeply-pitched roof extends from the main roof, showcasing prominent boarded verges beneath the deep thatch. The inner doorway also has a hoodmould, while the canted side walls feature two-light casements with similar hoodmoulds. The low thatched roof creates a deep canopy around the lodge, with a chimney at its apex. The rear and interior of the building were not inspected.
At the entrance to the drive, there are gate piers that form a carriage gateway and side gate. These are granite ashlar monoliths with square sections, panelled fronts, square cornices, and low pyramidal caps. The lodge is similar in form and style to South Lodge at South Tehidy, and both served Tehidy House, the home of the Basset family.
