Description
The Stables is a building that has been partly converted into a garage and store. It likely dates from the 18th century and was partially remodeled in the early 19th century for Reverend Charles Prideaux-Brune. The structure is built of stone rubble and features a slate roof with hipped ends. It has an overall rectangular plan that includes a carriage house, now a garage on the left, a tack room, five loose boxes, and a store on the right. The first floor, which is only partly floored, was probably used for accommodation for a stable hand and as a hay loft.
Architecturally, the building is designed in the Gothick style and stands two storeys tall with a window arrangement of 1:3:5 on the front. The ground floor openings are asymmetrical. On the left, there is a mullion and transom window with three tall, four-centred arched openings divided by stepped buttresses, originally part of the coach house but now serving as a garage. To the right, there are three mullion and transom windows with two four-centred arch doorways in between. The first floor features eight quatrefoil openings. The two-storey rear elevation has recessed ends under continuous eaves and four-centred arches to the windows on the first floor.
Inside, the central range includes a tack room with a timber boarded partition and five Gothick loose boxes designed in a style reminiscent of Batty Langley, featuring four-centred arched openings. There is also heraldic plasterwork in the lobby directly in front of the loose boxes, and at least one reused door from around the 17th century.
