Description

The entrance gate and flanking walls forming mock fortifications to the east of Prideaux Place were likely added by Edmund Prideaux between 1728 and 1745 or by his son Humphrey before 1758, when they are depicted in a print by Borlase. The structure is built of slate stone rubble and features a moulded plinth and a Catacleuse stone arch at the entrance.

Two square crenellated turrets with moulded plinths flank a crenellated wall that has a reset late 16th-century Catacleuse stone 4-centred arch with moulded jambs that end in elaborate scroll stops. The spandrels are carved, and the hood mould is also moulded. The walls to the north and south are crenellated and were extended in front of the north wing, likely in the early 19th century. They were further extended to create a crenellated screen for the stable yard.

A drawing by Edmund Prideaux shows the house before alterations to the gables of the northeast and southeast wings and includes the temple, but does not depict the mock fortifications. However, the Borlase print from 1758 shows the existing entrance and flanking walls, which extend from the northeast corner of the house to the front.
