Description

Carboys Farmhouse, along with its adjoining farm buildings and garden walls, dates back to 1714. The structure is built from granite rubble with granite dressings and features a steep roof covered in scantle slate at the front and asbestos slate at the rear. Large dressed granite stacks rise over the gable ends.

The farmhouse originally consisted of two rooms: a hall/kitchen on the left with a very large fireplace and a parlour on the right, separated by a cross passage. There is a later single-storey lean-to extension behind the parlour and a 20th-century lean-to behind the kitchen.

The exterior is two storeys high and was originally nearly symmetrical, featuring a five-window south-west front with a doorway centrally located among the windows. There are blocked window openings on the ground and first floors to the right of the doorway, as well as blocked doorway openings at the far left. The front has been altered to a four-window arrangement, with first-floor openings slightly enlarged and some remodelling of the ground floor openings. The windows are now fitted with 20th-century horned sashes, and the door is also from the 20th century.

While the interior has not been inspected, it is reported that earlier features may be concealed. The farmhouse is enclosed by rubble-coped rubble walls that create a shallow garden in front, with a gateway aligned with the doorway. The gateway features round-headed granite monolith piers, an iron gate, and a mounting stone to the right.

Adjoining the farmhouse on the left are two barns, both from the 19th century, constructed of granite rubble with grouted scantle slate roofs that step down from the house. Both barns have rectangular plans, with shippons on the ground floor and storage lofts above. The left barn has a nearly symmetrical front with a central doorway and pigeon holes between the two first-floor windows. The right barn features two first-floor windows and a loading doorway on the right, with a ground floor doorway to the left of the middle. The barns have old ledged doors, hopper windows, or shuttered windows.
