Description
The flanking walls and gateway to the bridge over the moat, located about 8 metres east of the Old Rectory, were built in 1851 by William White. The walls are made of slatestone rubble with stone coping and stand about one metre high and 4 metres long, sweeping out at each end of the bridge. They feature a chamfered cornice with rounded slate coping. A single wrought iron gate from the later 19th century is included, flanked by railing stanchions with spear finials. These walls and gateway are an important part of William White's design for the Old Rectory and serve as the main pedestrian entrance.
