Description
This is an 18th-century cottage with an attached outbuilding, extended in the 19th century and altered internally in the 20th and 21st centuries.
The building is constructed of granite stone rubble with granite dressings, covered by a slate roof. It is a single-depth building of what was originally a two-room plan, with a central passage. A single-storey lean-to extension is at the rear, and a single-storey outbuilding is attached to the south-west corner.
The cottage has a gable-ended, two-storey form with a three-bay south-facing front elevation. All windows have been replaced in the 20th century but remain in the original openings. A single-storey lean-to porch occupies the centre of the front, flanked by two-light casement windows with square granite lintels. Above are three first-floor two-light casements with shaped granite surrounds. Stone stacks rise from the gables at either end of the building; the right-hand stack is lateral, incorporating a bread oven. The rear elevation features a lean-to and asymmetrical window placement. The roof is covered in slate tiles. Attached to the south-west corner is a single-storey store constructed of granite stone with a pitched slate roof.
Inside, the original main entrance, beyond the lean-to porch, has a substantial stone surround. This, along with a doorway in the original rear wall, created the former central passage. The ground floor is now a single room, though variations in the flagstone floor indicate the original two-room layout. Fireplaces with large granite stone surrounds are at either end; the mantel on the left is roughly chamfered, with a recess beside it topped by a roughly-hewn timber supported by a central corbel. The right fireplace has been partially in-filled, showing evidence of a raised mantel. A granite arch is present within the rear lean-to. First-floor joists were replaced in the 20th century, and the modern staircase incorporates former railway sleepers. The roof structure is timber-framed, with an A-frame design. Most other joinery on the first floor dates to the 20th and 21st centuries.
The listing excludes two semi-detached granite stone outbuildings and two detached modern agricultural buildings within the yard.
