Description

The compressor house and chimney, located approximately 45 metres east of the Tincroft Mine Man Engine, is a late 19th-century structure associated with the former tin mine, now in a derelict state. Constructed from granite rubble with squared quoins and jambs, it features brick arches over its openings and is currently roofless. The building has a rectangular plan oriented east-west and is single-storey. The west front, facing the shaft, has a very wide round-headed doorway or machine way. The south side wall contains three round-headed windows, with the central window being larger and higher than the others, while the rear wall has two similar windows; both side walls are heavily covered in ivy. Attached to the north-west corner is a tapered cylindrical chimney, which has a prominent moulded brick cornice at the stone stage, although the top of the brick stage is damaged. Inside, there are two rows of large squared machine bases separated by a narrow slot for a reciprocating beam. This structure is a significant remnant of the man engine that operated from 1863 to 1894 and is believed to be the only surviving example that is not in ruins. In 1870, Tincroft Mine was reported as the richest tin mine in the world, and it ceased underground operations in 1926. The compressor house forms a group with the man engine house located approximately 45 metres to the west.
