Description

The winding engine house, also known as a "whim," is associated with Chappel's shaft of the former Old Cook's Kitchen Mine, located off Tincroft Road in Carn Brea. This structure, now derelict and in a state of disrepair, likely dates from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of uncoursed granite rubble with quoins, featuring a bob wall made of dressed granite blocks. The building has brick arches for the windows and a brick upper stage for the chimney, but it is currently roofless.

The engine house has a rectangular plan aligned on an east-west axis, with the bob wall situated to the west. In front of this wall are the remains of the foundations for the former winding drum, and a chimney is attached at the north-east corner. The structure consists of three stages, with round-headed openings, including a driver's window in the bob wall that has a brick surround. There are two windows on the ground floor of the south wall and one window on each floor above, as well as one window on each floor of the rear wall. The north side wall has collapsed. The tapered cylindrical chimney stack features cornices on both stages.

Historically, Cook's Kitchen Mine was one of the earliest mines in the area, known to have been operational for copper since the early 18th century. It was also one of the deepest mines, reaching depths of 3,000 feet, and was quite profitable until its closure in 1913. This winding engine house forms a prominent group with the pump engine and chimney located to the west.
