Description

Tincroft Mine Man Engine and Loadings is a derelict man engine house and loadings from around 1860, associated with a former tin mine. It is constructed of granite rubble with quoins, featuring a bob wall made of dressed blocks and brick arches for the windows. The building has a rectangular plan aligned on a north-south axis, with the bob wall located to the north and the loadings positioned in front of it. A chimney is attached at the south-west corner.

The structure consists of three stages and includes mostly round-headed openings, such as a driver's window in the bob wall and a small square opening to the left, although the sides of the bob opening above this are now dilapidated. There is one window on each floor of the rear wall and two tall windows on the east side. In front of the bob wall, there is a loading area made of large square granite blocks that frame the shaft head, with remnants of bolts and fixings still visible. The tapered cylindrical chimney has a cornice that remains at the eaves level.

Historically, this site is a significant remnant of the man engine that operated from 1863 to 1894 and is believed to be the only surviving example that is not in ruins. In 1870, Tincroft Mine was reported to be the richest tin mine in the world, and it ceased underground operations in 1926. The site is part of a group with its functional partners, the compressor house and chimney stack located approximately 45 meters to the east.
