Description

The garden walls, gate piers, and gates surround a garden that incorporates an ancient burial ground, located immediately west of Helland Farmhouse. The garden mound itself dates back to before the Norman Conquest, with the walls likely constructed in the 18th or 19th century and the goose house probably dating to the 18th century. The walls are made of coursed rubble and earth-retaining materials, with the gate piers constructed from dressed granite monoliths. 19th-century wrought-iron gates provide access. The mound is irregularly shaped and was remodelled as a garden in front of Helland Farmhouse. Built into the bank within the south wall is a probable goose house, oval in plan, with a domed, corbelled roof. The walls are constructed of several courses of horizontally-bedded rubble topped by several courses of vertically-set rubble. The doorway to the goose house features granite jambstones and a granite lintel. The square gate piers are constructed from monolithic granite and have round-headed sides. A semi-circular corbelled niche is set into the north garden wall. Several ancient granite fragments are preserved within the garden, including what appears to be a small font or holy water stoup.
