Description

This is a farmhouse, originally built circa early to mid-17th century, likely for the Peter family. It is located in Padstow, Cornwall, and is accompanied by high stone rubble garden walls with slate coping extending to the east.

The farmhouse is constructed of stone rubble, partly rendered, with slate and asbestos slate roofs. The west range has gable ends, while the range facing east incorporates a lower roof. Brick end stacks are present. The original plan appears to have been a U-shaped layout with three rooms at the rear (north) – heated by lateral stacks – and two front wings projecting to the south, with end stacks.

Around the early 18th century, the central part of the north range was remodelled, with the central room (now the dairy) partitioned and reduced in size. A main early 18th-century staircase was inserted to the west, alongside a back staircase to the east. A corridor was added at this time, running from a side entrance on the west front, along the south side of the main range and connecting to both staircases and the central entrance on the south front. Further alterations occurred around the mid-19th century, when the east side of the house was remodelled and given a symmetrical four-window garden front.

The east garden front is symmetrical with four windows, rendered with raised quoins and a string course. It features four 19th-century 12-pane sash windows on each floor. The north rear elevation displays an asymmetrical arrangement of windows; the window on the east side has a deep chamfered lintel with straight cut stops, while the window on the west side features an ovolo moulded lintel with stepped and tongue stops. A 20th-century glazed porch extension has been added to the south front, and a 19th-century outshut extension is present on the west elevation.

Internally, there are several ovolo moulded doorframes with stepped and tongue stops, on both the ground and first floors of the west range. The central range contains an early 18th-century dog-leg main staircase and a dog-leg back staircase, both with turned balusters and deeply moulded, ramped handrails. The ceiling beams in the northwest room are chamfered with run-out stops. The roof structure was not inspected.

The Peter family acquired the Barton of Trenearne, including Treator, Tregerryn, Treniow and Trelowsa, in the 16th century. Thomas Peter was granted these estates in 1579 and initially resided at Trenearne before moving to Treator, which then became the residence of the Peter family for approximately 200 years.
