Description
A group of five chest tombs located about one metre south of the south aisle of the Church of St Cubert, dating from the early to mid 19th century. They are constructed from granite ashlar and brick, featuring slate inscription tablets.
The tomb for William Lawer, circa 1850, has an ashlar chest on a moulded plinth, a flat top with a moulded edge, and a rebated slate inscription tablet with valedictory verses. The tomb for Edward Lawer, from 1837, also features an ashlar chest on a moulded plinth, with a similar flat top and rebated slate inscription tablet.
The tomb for Simon Lawer, dated 1814, is a plain brick chest topped with a slate inscription tablet that has good lettering and valedictory verses with scrolly decoration. Another tomb for Simon Lawer, from 1809, is a plain brick chest with a granite lid that has a moulded edge, topped with a rebated slate inscription tablet featuring good lettering by W. Cock of St Enoder.
Lastly, the tomb for William Lawer, dated 1805, is a plain brick chest with a slate inscription tablet laid on top, adorned with carved fans at the corners and featuring good lettering with admonitory verses, also signed by W. Cock, sculptor.
