Description

Cubert Vicarage

A vicarage of 18th-century origin, enlarged around 1800, with a stable and coach house added in the later 19th century and further alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed of granite rubble with granite dressings, partly rendered, and roofed in rag slate with ridge tiles. The main range is hipped, with an axial stack featuring a brick shaft. The right-hand range is hipped at its front end with a stack of rendered shaft.

The original building comprises a 3-room plan range to the right, which has become a service range, with the front room projecting to the right. Around 1800, the vicarage was enlarged with an addition to the left containing a 2-room plan with entrance hall and stair hall. The two rooms to the left are heated from back-to-back fireplaces served by the axial stack, with the entrance hall to the right and stair hall to the rear right. In the 20th century, the plan of this range was altered with the addition of a rear lateral corridor at ground and first floor levels. In the later 19th century, a tack room, stable and coach house were added to the rear right.

The exterior presents a 2-storey asymmetrical front with the circa 1800 range to the left forming a nearly symmetrical composition of 1:1:1 bays, with the central bay advanced and hipped. The centre bay features 19th-century paired 4-pane sashes with margin-glazing, flat arches and keystones at ground floor, and a similar single sash at first floor. The bay to the left has a 19th-century 4-pane sash with margin-glazing and keystone at both floors. The bay to the right contains a 20th-century conservatory set in the angle to the front wing, with a 19th-century 4-panelled inner door and overlight, and a 4-pane sash with margin-glazing and keystone at first floor. The 2-storey wing to the right has two 19th-century 4-pane sashes with margin-glazing and keystones at both ground and first floors. The front end has a similar sash with a brick segmental arch at first floor to the right. The left end features a similar sash with keystone at both levels. At the right side is a single-storey 19th-century lean-to with a slurried slate roof and rendered finish, containing a 20th-century door and 2-light casement. To the right are four 20th-century casements at ground floor; the first floor has one single light and a 4-pane sash with margin-glazing. Attached to and projecting to the right is the single-storey tack room with loft, featuring a 20th-century half-glazed door and hipped roof. The stable and coach house projects to the right as a single-storey structure with a 2-light 8-pane casement, plank door to the stable and 20th-century double garage doors to the coach house, with a blind gable end. At the rear, the main range has a 15-pane 19th-century sash lighting the stair within a round arch with granite surround and keystone. A 20th-century 9-pane sash is present at ground and first floor to the right. To the left, the tack room projects beyond the main range line, with a 6-pane window and plank door.

Internally, the early range retains a 18th-century cupboard with glazed door featuring Gothic glazing bars, of the same design as a cupboard at Ellenglaze Manor. The other rooms have been substantially remodelled in the 20th century. The stair in the main stair hall is an open-well design with stick balusters, dating to the 19th century.
