Description

A terrace of six cottages, originally three pairs, built in the early 19th century and depicted on a tithe map from 1843. The construction is of local killas rubble with flat elvan arches, likely using Pentewan stone, and has rag slate roofing with brick end stacks. Original rainwater heads and downpipes are cast iron.

The two-storey terrace has a twelve-window facade, with each pair of cottages presenting a symmetrical two-window front, punctuated by a wider space above the doorways, creating a sense of separation. The windows are late 19th or 20th century four-pane sashes, and the doors are likely original four-panel doors with later glazed upper panels.

The interior has not been inspected, but is presumed to be largely unaltered, reflecting the exterior appearance. This is a remarkably complete example of early 19th century housing intended for workers, forming part of an important and relatively unchanged group of buildings in the former fishing and china clay port of Charlestown.
