Description
Great Brighter Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating to the early 19th century. It is built of stone rubble and cob, rendered and painted, with a rag slate roof, gable ends, and brick chimney stacks. An outshut extends from the right-hand gable end, constructed of stone rubble with a lean-to slate roof and a projecting stone rubble rear chimney stack. The farmhouse follows a double-depth plan, originally comprising two large rooms at the front, with the larger room on the right being the kitchen, featuring a large fireplace and a cloam oven. An entrance is positioned slightly left of centre, leading to a narrow passage with a staircase to the rear. Two smaller, likely unheated service rooms are located at the rear. A kitchen was later added within the outshut on the right-hand gable end, and is heated by the projecting stone rubble rear lateral chimney stack. The front facade is regular, with a two-window arrangement. The ground floor features an entrance with a panelled door and a slate-hung porch with a part glazed door. This is flanked by two late 19th-century 16-pane horned sash windows. The first floor has two similar sashes. The rear elevation incorporates early 19th-century sashes and casements, one of which has been renewed with timber lintels. Inside, the farmhouse has 19th-century ceiling beams and an unmoulded lintel above the kitchen fireplace. A 19th-century framed staircase is also present.
