Description
The China clay works, located at SX 046582, date from the late 19th century and include a chimney and the remains of tanks. The chimney is constructed of white brick with metal banding, set on a base of granite rubble. There are seven rectangular tanks at the rear, made of rendered stone rubble. The clay slurry was transported via pipes that were tunnelled through a hill and over a viaduct into the tanks. Sediment was removed through sluice gates at the front of the tanks and onto a pan, which is a long platform in front of the tanks featuring heat ducts beneath the floor. The furnace and chimney are situated at the left end of the pan. In front of the pan, there is a railway track on a terrace for transporting the finished clay in the form of briquettes. The chimney has a circular shape with a tapered shaft and stands on a circular granite rubble base that is about 3 metres in diameter. Each tank measures approximately 20 metres by 10 metres, with walls rendered on the inside and made of granite rubble at the front, each featuring an opening to the front. The site is conveniently located near the railway for transporting china clay, with the station at Bridges, Luxulyan.
