Description
The grotto in the grounds of Mahebourg is a structure dating from around 1780. It is made of granite and features shell decoration. The grotto has a round arch over a seat, with the front of the arch faced with black volcanic pebbles. The stone roof is built against a granite boulder at the back. Inside, there is a pattern of ormer shells with graded colored pebbles in red and black. The seat has a sloping back, adorned with a star pattern made of shells and large conch shells along the top. This grotto was once part of the Vicarage garden, now known as King's Acre, which is a separate property. Its style is similar to the Shell Seat at Mount Edgcumbe Country Park.
