Description
The watermill, located in St Columb Major, dates from the mid to late 19th century and features later 19th-century additions and a few alterations. It is constructed from granite rubble with granite dressings and quoins, topped by a hipped slate roof with ridge tiles. The building has a rectangular plan, with the waterwheel situated on the right side, powered by a leat that runs from the rear to the front along the right side. There is a shallow wing at the front left, and attached to the rear is the former miller's house, which has a two-room plan and a stable on the right side, complete with an external stair leading to a loft over the stable.
The exterior of the three-storey mill includes a door and a window on the ground floor, with a smaller window on the second floor. The left wing has a hipped roof, featuring a door on the inner side and a tall window opening above, both adorned with granite voussoirs. The front of the wing has a ground floor door and a loading door above. The wing is two-storey, with the main mill built into the slope of the ground. The left side features a central door and a loading door above, while the left side of the front wing has wide loading doors at the first floor. The stable attached to the miller's house has a cart entry on the ground floor and a loading door above.
On the right side of the mill, there is a cast iron wheel mounted on a wooden watershaft, which was originally fitted with wooden floats. The first floor has two window openings, and the second floor has one central window opening, all with granite voussoirs. There is a straight joint connecting the mill to the miller's house on the right. At the rear, the miller's house is two-storey, featuring a six-panelled door with a blocked overlight, a large window to the left, and a smaller window to the right on the ground floor. The first floor has two windows, all with granite lintels. To the right, an external stone stair leads to a loft door over the stable, with a ground floor window to the left. The interior is not accessible but may still contain some machinery.
