Description
Tresaddern Farmhouse is a farmhouse probably dating from the mid to late 17th century, remodelled and extended in the early 18th century around 1720, with further remodelling and alterations in the mid to late 19th century and few later changes.
The building is constructed of granite rubble with granite quoins and brick dressings. It has a hipped asbestos slate roof with ridge tiles. An end stack with brick shaft stands to the right; a stack to the left has been removed.
The plan shows a rear wing of uncertain original function, divided into a right room heated by an end stack and a small left room heated by a front-end stack. This may represent the rear wing of an early house or part of one that formerly extended further to the right. In the early 18th century the house was remodelled with the addition of a front range comprising a central entrance leading to a large entrance hall with a stair to its rear left. Rooms occupy both sides, each heated from an end stack. The range includes an unheated rear-right room formerly used as a dairy, with a service stair, which was enlarged around the mid to late 19th century.
Externally, the building presents nearly 2 storeys with a nearly symmetrical 3-window front. The first floor has three 16-pane sashes of 19th-century date with brick segmental arches and keystones. The ground floor features a panelled and glazed studded door, probably of early 18th-century date, with a 20th-century portico. A 19th-century 16-pane sash stands to the left with brick segmental arch; a 20th-century French window occupies the right. At the left side the end of the main range is blind, flanked by granite quoins. The rear wing steps slightly forward to the left and also has granite quoins. Its ground floor contains a 2-light casement with brick segmental arch; the first floor has a 12-pane sash and single light with timber lintel, both with splayed reveals internally. The gable end of the wing has a brick stack rising from the roof slope, which has been rebuilt. A 19th-century 6-pane sash and a 2-panelled 18th-century door with the date 1611 carved on the lintel appear here. The inner side of the wing has 6-pane sashes at ground and first floor, and a 20th-century door to the left. At the right end of the main range is a 4-pane sash at first floor to the left and a small single opening by the stack at attic level. The rear of the main range is rebuilt to the left with a brick wall containing a door, 2-light window and 4-pane casement at ground floor, with a 20th-century window at first floor.
The entrance hall contains a winder stair to the rear left with stick balusters. The front left room at ground floor retains complete fielded panelling with a jib door to the rear, which formerly gave access to the kitchen. It features a moulded cornice and cupboards flanking the fireplace. The chimneypiece has been replaced with a roughly hewn granite fireplace. The front window has a panelled window seat and panelled shutters. A 2-panelled door with scrollwork in the panelling above is present. The front right room has a fine early 18th-century 3-panelled door. In the rear wing, the large room has a rear fireplace with wooden lintel. The smaller room has a fireplace with roughly hewn granite lintel and cloam oven. The doorway between these rooms has a panelled and studded door. The outer doorway to the large room, leading into the 19th-century dairy, retains a fine 17th-century 12-panelled door with moulded fillets and studs. At first floor in the rear wing, two rooms correspond to those below; the larger has a doorway with moulded and scroll-stopped wooden frame and 3-panelled early 18th-century door. The smaller room has a plain 2-panelled door with strap hinges. In the front range all rooms have 3-panelled doors of early 18th-century date. The room to the left has a bolection-moulded wooden chimneypiece of early 18th-century date with a 19th-century mantel over. The roof space is not accessible.
