Description
Jubilee Pool is a seaside lido built in 1935, designed by Captain F Latham, the Borough Engineer. It is made of painted concrete and has a triangular plan that extends into the sea. The structure features stepped terraces that descend from the entrances at road level, with square-headed openings leading to rows of dressing boxes built into the terraces. The concrete has been shaped to create a graceful series of Art Deco curves. This design was particularly striking and received much positive attention at the time. Jubilee Pool is now recognized as the finest surviving example of its type, apart from the Saltdean Lido in Brighton, which is also listed. In Europe, lidos like the Piscine Molitor in Paris, built in 1929, were among the first to adopt a modernist style, promoting the ideals of sunlight and physical fitness. The seaside lido represented a shift in sea bathing during the 1920s from a primarily health-focused activity to one of leisure, allowing local authorities to embrace Continental trends without the restrictions faced by more traditional pools.
