Description
House. It was probably built in the 17th century, but has been extensively altered, with an early 19th century addition. The house was altered and restored at the time of a survey in 1988. The exterior is largely rendered rubble at ground floor and cob above, with a sandstone ashlar addition, slate roofs (some of which have been repaired), and brick chimneys. The building has an irregular rectangular plan, with the original part aligned north-south. A small service wing is located at the north end, and a single-depth addition from the early 19th century extends across the south end. This southern facade is symmetrical, two storeys high, and three bays wide, built in a simple Georgian style. The central doorway has a small wooden architrave featuring fluted pilasters and a pediment. The windows are 12-pane sashes with raised sills and splayed voussoirs with keystones. The roof is hipped with projecting eaves and side-wall chimneys. The older section at the rear has various altered openings. The single-storey service wing at the north end has two-light sliding sash windows on its north side and a substantial brick chimney stack at its gable. Inside the service wing is a large, rectangular granite fireplace, likely dating to the 17th century; the rest of the interior has been altered. The house was formerly the home of Captain Vivian, who was associated with Richard Trevithick.
