School House Above 40 Metres South West Of Carnanton House

The school house, dated 1845, is located above 40 metres southwest of Carnanton House in Mawgan-in-Pydar. It incorporates earlier 17th century features and has undergone 20th century repairs. The building is constructed of slatestone rubble, partly rendered, with granite dressings, and features a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends. It has two rear lateral stacks and a two-room plan with a central entrance through a porch. Originally, the interior was partitioned, with each room heated from a rear lateral stack.

The exterior is single storey with an asymmetrical front that includes a gabled porch. Some ridge tiles are handmade and crested. The porch has a reused granite outer doorway with a four-centred arch, while the right side features a reused granite two-light window with three-centred arched lights. The inner door is half-glazed. To the right, there are two 18-pane sash windows with thick glazing bars, which were reused from Carnanton House during its 19th century renovations. These are in exposed boxes and made with crown glass. To the left, there is a two-light chamfered granite window and a 16-pane horizontal sliding sash at ground level, along with a two-light six-pane casement at the upper level. The left end of the building is blind and partly rendered at the upper level.

The right gable end, which faces the garden in front of Carnanton House, features a raised gable with stone coping and a stone bellcote. It has a large two-light window with cusped lights and Y tracery, which includes lattice glazing and stained glass in the upper tracery, dated and bearing the initials HW for Humphrey Willyams. The rear of the building is blind.

Inside, the schoolroom has a ceiling, while the room to the left features stone paving in a polygonal pattern. The ceiling includes two stencilled fittings for lamps, with the original lamps still in place. There is also a gallery above the left room, with a balustrade made of stick balusters.
