Trewartha And Adjoining Shippon

A farmhouse and adjoining shippon, dating from the early 19th century, with some alterations circa the early 20th century. The farmhouse is built of granite rubble with dressed granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels, and has slate sills and scantle slate roofs in four levels. The brick chimneys over the gable ends of the original, taller part were reroofed circa the early 20th century; the left-hand chimney is set diagonally, and another is over the gable end of a slightly lower roof to the right, which covers a slightly lower shippon with a gable end to the left and a hipped end to a single-storey addition on the far right.

The original plan likely comprised a double-depth layout with shallow rear service rooms which have since become full-depth rooms, and initially two similar houses with a main kitchen/living room at the front of each, a shallow pantry behind, and cross passages centrally. The former front door wall of the left-hand house is now blocked, with only a rear doorway remaining. The shippon to the left is slightly later, and includes granite steps up to a central first-floor loading doorway at the rear. To the right is a one-room plan, two-storey service wing addition, and to the far right, a one-room plan, single-storey addition.

The east front has a fairly regular six-window facade. The original four-window front, in the center, has circa early 20th century 16-pane, two-light casements to the first-floor openings, with one opening likely cut when the casements were fitted, otherwise exhibiting original openings. A circa early 20th century ledged door is positioned below the third window from the left on the first floor. A former doorway to the left of this door is now blocked, and there is a circa late 19th century four-pane horned sash to the left and an original 16-pane hornless sash to the right. To the right of this is a circa mid-19th century one-window, two-storey front, and, to the far right, a one-window, single-storey front, both featuring nine-pane horned sashes.

The shippon to the left has a first floor pitching-eye, a small original ventilation window to the ground floor, and a large, reduced window opening on the right. The rear of the farmhouse retains original small window openings with sashes or casements, a tall stair sash in an opening likely cut circa the early 20th century, and a small 20th-century lean-to. Granite steps lead to the shippon on the right. The interior is reportedly well-preserved, retaining many original features, and the shippon is said to retain its original fittings. The building is situated overlooking Prussia Cove.
