Description
The Old Malt House and Lease Stone is a house with a shop on the ground floor, dated 1658 on the lease stone, and likely incorporating earlier materials. It has undergone alterations for the shop in the mid to late 19th century and further changes in the 20th century. The building is constructed of slatestone and granite rubble, with a rendered front facing North Street. It features a hipped asbestos slate roof with ridge tiles and a stack on the left side.
Originally, the house appears to have had a three-room layout with a through passage. There is one room to the right of the passage and two rooms to the left, with the left end of the house facing North Street and the lease stone located at the front left corner. The left end room, now the front room facing North Street, was converted into a shop in the mid to late 19th century, retaining entrances on both the left and right sides.
The building has two storeys, and the front facing North Street includes a 20th-century plate-glass shop window with a half-glazed door to the right. There is also a 20th-century two-light window on the first floor. The lease stone, set as a quoin on the left, has the inscription: "Walter Kendal of Lostwithiel was founder of-this house in 1658 Hath a lease for three thousand years which had beginning the 29th of September Anno 1658" (all lettering is in upper case).
On the left side, which is in rubble, there are two 20th-century windows at the ground floor under one timber lintel, previously deeper openings with cut granite masonry between. There are also two blocked doors with timber lintels and a half-glazed door, along with a blocked window at the end right. The right side is rendered and roughly divided into four bays; the first bay has a 20th-century window on the first floor, the second bay has a small 20th-century window at the ground floor and a large 20th-century window at the first floor with a gable above, the third bay features a granite doorway with a four-centred arch that is chamfered and step-stopped, with a 20th-century studded door, and a 20th-century window to the left and above. The end bay has no windows. The rear is also rendered, with a gable end and two 20th-century two-light casements at the first floor. The interior has not been inspected.
