Description

The Penmere Manor Hotel is a small country house that has been converted into a hotel. It was built in the early 19th century and significantly extended in the 20th century. The exterior features incised stucco on rubble, rusticated at the plinth, and a dry Delabole slate roof with diminishing courses and projecting eaves. There are two axial stuccoed stacks with stepped cornices and original square-on-plan clay pots. The building has a double-depth plan with a bowed stair projection at the rear center, along with 20th-century extensions.

The hotel is two storeys tall and has a symmetrical three-window garden and entrance fronts. The garden front has a 1:1:1-bay layout, with a recessed central bay that includes a bowed central glazed projection featuring its original glazing with horizontal panes and margin panes. The original 12-pane sashes with small horns are present, except for a later 4-pane sash above the bowed window. The entrance front has a central doorway with a door and a distyle porch supported by fluted columns, featuring a segmental arch and a moulded cornice. The panelled reveals and the original wide six-panel door have the top two panels later glazed.

The rear of the building was not inspected, but it has an original bowed stair sash with glazing bars, which can be seen from inside the stair hall. The interior boasts fine quality features, including moulded and carved ceiling cornices with different details in all inspected rooms, panelled doors, window shutters, and a half-elliptical stair hall. The open-well staircase has a mahogany handrail and iron balusters with anthemion detail on an open string.
