Description

Menehay House is a small country house, likely originally a farmhouse, dating from the 18th century. It was remodeled in the early to mid-19th century and again in the 20th century. The house features stuccoed walls and a dry Delabole slate and grouted scantle slate L-plan hipped roof, with rendered brick stacks over the original end walls and cast-iron ogee-section gutters.

The layout of the house is a double-depth overall L-shaped plan. The original structure likely included two front rooms flanking an entrance hall. In the early 19th century, the plan was probably deepened, and a service wing was added or remodeled at right angles behind the right-hand side. An axial passage connects the right-hand room with the rear wing, leading to a central stair hall. In the late 19th century, a lean-to was added to the left side of the house, which was later heightened in the 20th century.

The exterior is two storeys high with an overall six-window south-south-east front. The original symmetrical five-window front on the right features a central doorway, which likely has a 20th-century glazed door within a wooden doorcase. The early to mid-19th-century windows are 12-pane hornless sashes set in probable 18th-century openings. There is another similar sash window on the ground floor to the left and one on the right-hand wall of the rear wing on the first floor. Other windows are late 19th or 20th-century horned sashes with glazing bars, including a two-storey canted bay on the right-hand return wall. There may be additional old windows at the rear, although these were not inspected.

Menehay House is located on an ancient site, referred to as "Menehy" in the Lay Subsidy Rolls of 1327.
