Description
Coombe Methodist Church is a Methodist church dated 1859 and enlarged in 1890. It is constructed of granite rubble with stone dressings and has a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends. The building has a single auditorium plan, with the entrance located at the front gable end and the ritual east at the rear.
The front gable end is symmetrical, featuring a central round-arched doorway with 20th-century plank double doors and a margin-glazed fanlight. This doorway is accessed by a flight of six granite steps, with plain cast iron railings on each side and cast iron footscrapers. There are tall round-arched windows on either side, each with four panes and margin glazing. Above the doorway is a central circular recessed datestone inscribed in uppercase lettering: WMC 1859 ENLARGED 1890. The right and left sides of the church have three 19th-century 12-pane sash windows with cambered brick arches.
The interior was not fully accessible at the time of the survey in October 1987, but it features a gallery at the front gable end with a panelled front adorned with stencilled painted Gothic decorations, supported by shaped brackets. An organ is located at the rear gable end, and the church may retain additional features such as benches and a rostrum.
