Description

Penhargard Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from around 1850, which incorporates part of an earlier building and has seen few later alterations. It is constructed of slatestone rubble, with the front being slate-hung. The roof is made of slurried slate, featuring ridge tiles and gable ends, and there are gable end stacks with rubble shafts.

The building has a double depth plan, with a central entrance leading to principal rooms on the front left and right, each heated by a gable end stack. At the rear center is a stair hall, with a shallow service room to the rear left. The kitchen forms a rear wing on the right, which includes a small unheated room at the end; this kitchen is heated by a stack on the right side and may be part of an earlier 17th-century building that was refronted on a different axis in the mid-19th century.

The exterior is two stories high with a symmetrical three-window front. All windows are early 20th-century two-light casements, each with eight panes, and are larger on the ground floor. There is a central gabled and glazed porch featuring inset stained glass with a shield of arms, dated 1632, and an inner panelled door. The right side of the building is blind, while the left side is rendered. The rear wing has a stack with a curved oven at the base on the right side. The left (inner) side features a 20th-century porch and has inset stone carved with three trefoils, along with sash windows. The rear of the main range has two windows on the ground floor and, on the first floor, a small two-light casement with L hinges on the right and a 12-pane sash on the left.

The interior has not been fully inspected, but the kitchen in the rear wing is noted for its unusually high ceiling, although the fireplace is blocked. The slate floor is present, and the wall between the kitchen and the main front range is unusually thick, suggesting it may be part of an earlier house.
